Federal Trade Commission (FTC)
The FTC, the regulatory agency responsible for consumer protection and privacy enforcement, provides a number of useful resources and compliance guides for businesses subject to privacy regulations. Links to a few of these sites are provided below:
United States Department of Commerce - Safe Harbor
The US Department of Commerce is tasked with overseeing the Safe Harbor framework, a set of privacy principles which (if followed) enable businesses in to easily transport personal data from the European Union to the United States. This website provides useful information for organizations that are considering joining the Safe Harbor.
European Commission - Data Protection
This website from the European Commission provides valuable information regarding the use of alternative mechanisms to legitimize the transfer of personal data from the European Union to the United States (e.g., model contracts, binding corporate rules). Here you will also find guidance published by Article 29 Working Party on the application of the European Union Data Protection Directive enacted in 1995.
Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada
This website is useful for companies doing business in Canada and who are regulated by the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (or PIPEDA) as well as other provincial/territorial privacy laws in Canada.
