Unlike other privacy certification programs, we do not review or certify a privacy policy for compliance with an arbitrary set of privacy guidelines and we certainly do not represent that a company’s data handling practices are necessarily “privacy friendly” or “privacy protective.” In today’s generally-open social networking and data sharing environment, we believe these types of assurances are unrealistic and potentially misleading. Instead, we seek to make sure that when companies present a description of their data handling practices (in the form of a privacy policy or privacy statement, which is required by some laws), these descriptions are truthful and kept up-to-date.
